One thing that I've always wished a movie would do is simulate the tricks our eyes play on us in the twilight and near water. Where your eyes flash over something and you see something quite distinctly but when you look back that isn't what you thought at all. A short while back I woke up with a hooded and cloaked shadow leaning over my bed. After just about jumping out of my skin I could see that it was a dress my wife had hung beside the bed. Twain saw a stag.
BTW Mark I pay close attention to the first words of books and plays. Hamlet begins with the words "Who's there?" and isn't that what the whole play is about? Twain begins in an almost anti- Melville way with the words "Don't call me Captain!" when the man is clearly dressed as a captain. It's a wonderful opening Mark. Don't feel any pressure about the last lines ; ) "I only am escaped, alone, to tell thee". I

Stags, especially white ones, are supposed to be magical, and lead followers to someplace else. Given that Lafayette Lines distinguishes themselves with "black cap'd captains," it would fit that this particular stage would be black too! http://sailortwain.com/blog/2011/09/26/sailortwain281/

I just spent the last two hours going back through the entirety of Sailor Twain just because of this page instead of starting my whale hunting paper.... so worth it. Cannot wait for Friday!

I'm flipping back and forth between this and page 16... are there supposed to be minor differences? Kind of interesting how memories can blur after the passing of time.

Happy Lizzie Jennings Day!

I will say that I love it when the story goes back to itself. Love it.

It's funny, at the time that happened, I thought that our mermaid looked differently to Lafayette than she did to Twain. (That there was no stag.)

I knew it! A lovely confluence of two unrelated (?) events. Beautiful done, Mark! And excellent observation, Salty. I wholeheartedly agree!

Oh wow, completely missed that before. Though I suppose that's what I get for not having reread it.
