Mark Siegel was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and grew up in France. He is the illustrator of To Dance: A Ballerina’s Graphic Novel, written by his wife, Siena Cherson Siegel, a Robert F. Sibert Honor Book; Seadogs: An Epic Ocean Operetta, written by Lisa Wheeler, winner of the Texas Bluebonnet Award; and several other graphic novels and children’s picture books, including the adult New York Times bestseller Sailor Twain, or the Mermaid in the Hudson, which serialized on this site from 2010 to 2012.

Before finishing High School, Mark had made over twenty 8mm clay and puppet animated shorts and numerous comics. By the end of college at Brown, he had written seven plays, two of which he also directed. His first job after graduating was at the clay animation studio OliveJar in Boston.

Mark went on to develop twin careers as an author/artist and an editor—eventually becoming the founder and Editorial Director of First Second Books. First Second is a Macmillan publisher and has become the graphic novel imprint with the highest awards in publishing, and one of the most coveted houses for the very best creators in graphic novels today. It is home to such great talents as National Book Award Finalist and Printz Winner Gene Yang, and New York Times bestsellers such as Paul Pope, Jillian Tamaki, Scott McCloud, Joann Sfar, Ben Hatke, Sara Varon, and many more.
